Death Note: Episode 1 "Rebirth"
It opens in the Shinigami world-a desolate land unlivable by normal standards which coincidentally looks like Charlie's apartment. We catch a glimpse of the creatures within and then snap back to reality-
Tokyo, Japan. The Death Note flutters down to earth Forrest Gump feather style and is only noticed by super genius, Light Yagami. Random insights from his surrounding classmates exemplify just how far more advanced Light is (see random student's dialogue: "My mom is so useless! She never picks me up on time!"). Whether it is boredom or curiosity, Light decides to pick up the Death Note and take it for a spin (not expecting it to work) but it does with his first victim on TV. Still not 100% sure of its working ability, Light decides to test it out again.
Enter random public raping.
Light successfully kills the rapist on scene and still not convinced, does what any normal high school student would: goes home and over the course of two weeks writes about 500 more names inside of the Death Note.
Charlie then poses the question: "Why do anime characters look 'white' if they are supposed to be in Japan?" Pher fields that one and lets us know the subtle differences between the races, mostly noticeable in the eye shape. So where as Light may appear to be an American, his eyes are shaped differently than the future American characters later in the series.
As opposed to the outerworld characters that have eyes shaped and colored like olives.
Enter Ryuk in a creepy I'm-watching-you-change-in-the-shadows-of-your-room type of way. Light, in response to seeing his glowing eyes, shits his pants, screams like a little girl, and calmly replies, "I was expecting you."
Enter mom-figure with the usual all night study session snack of choice-apples-which happens to be like an ecstasy pill for Ryuk. Upon shutting the door the apples teleport themselves to be sitting on Light's desk. As Ryuk makes short work of the apples, he sort of explains some of the rules to the Death Note. Cue Death Note montage which contains Gregorian chanting only to be described as saying, "Death Note....Dominus!" over and over as the orchestra crescendos and Light finishes with a flourish, sweating profusely because writing has never been so taxing.
Rules we learned:
- The writer has to have the face in their mind when writing down the person's name in order for it to take effect.
- If the cause of death is not specified the person will die of a heart attack.
